The safeguarding code
It applies on every visit, collection day and sorting session, and in every message you send as a Pages of Hope volunteer.
Never alone with a child
Visits happen in pairs or more, in shared rooms, with a member of the home's or school's staff present. If you find yourself alone with a child, move to where others are.
The host's rules come first
Follow the instructions of the staff at every home and school we visit, including where you may go and when you leave.
No photographs on personal phones
Only the society's named photographer takes photographs, under the consent rules. Never photograph, film or record a child on your own device.
Nothing about a child goes online
Do not post, share or describe any child — name, face, school, home or location — on social media or anywhere else, during or after your time with us.
No private contact
Do not exchange numbers or social media accounts with children, give personal gifts or money, or arrange to meet outside a visit. Books are given through the home or school.
Kind words, appropriate touch
Speak to every child with respect. No shouting, humiliation or physical punishment, ever. Keep physical contact brief, appropriate and led by the child.
Arrive clear-headed
No alcohol, drugs or smoking before or during any visit, collection day or sorting session.
Report every concern the same day
If a child tells you something worrying, or you see something that troubles you, do not investigate or promise to keep it secret. Tell the visit lead the same day; they pass it to the society's safeguarding lead and the institution. If a child is in immediate danger, call 999 or Childline Kenya on 116.
Vetting before visits
Nobody visits children until they have agreed to this code, consented to a background check and been vetted by the society. Breaking the code ends your volunteering with Pages of Hope.
